camping with spies

These are notes made while camping a few weeks ago...

###

When I went back to my tent to go to sleep a mouse jumped out of one of my bags. Really moved fast for such a small critter. Took me a few times of chasing it out of things to convince it to finally go out the door. It hit the open land and booked away from the tent towards the dark.

Had a couple of good chances to get pictures of it, but didn't think to grab the camera.

I'll have to check tomorrow for mouse droppings and mousebitten food. I think the only food in here was in the closed backpack anyway.

Need to clean the zipper on the tent. Was a pain getting it back open and it won't close all the way :(.

Job board for LOPSA

Doug got the job board up on the LOPSA web site. He's done a fantastic job testing and getting patches on the test server and now has it up and running on the production site.

Wrote the job board list asking them to help us get jobs listed.

Great to see progress for LOPSA.

Linux etc.

Doing a presentation for PLUG west side Tue night.

Calling it "Linux etc." and covering things I think people should know. Ideally we'll have audience participation. In fact, I probably should learn something almost every time I give the presentation.

The presentation should really be mostly just standard *NIX stuff, but I'm not going to worry about compatibility this time around.

Hopefully the presentation will be a strange mix of trivial pursuit, game show and treasure hunt.

PLUG Ts

Got PLUG t-shirts up over the weekend. Ordered a couple to see how they turn out. Not linking to them anywhere for now.

The first sample t-shirt came out well. If the PLUG shirts work out it's time to put up some of my stuff and get it organized.

Protesting the board

The PUHSD teachers union had hundreds of people out picketing at the board meeting Thursday night. They met about a half mile from the board meeting, then picketed down Central to the meeting.

It was cool to see that much involvement. I asked and was told that there are about 1400 teachers in the district. That means the CTA might've had over 20% of the teachers show up to picket.

Inside we could hear them cheering out things like "CTA" and "It's not about the money." throughout the meeting.

The heart of the issue is that there has been a mutually agreed upon professional agreement in place between the teachers and PUHSD for decades and the school board has decided to summarily throw it out.

The heart of the issue is that there has been a mutually agreed upon professional agreement in place between the teachers and PUHSD for decades and the school board has decided to summarily throw it out. The board is replacing the professional agreement with a "handbook". As I understand it the terms of the handbook would be subject to the whims of the school board, so teachers would essentially have no protections. Many of the protections in the professional agreement are reported to have been pulled out.

Help a teacher's union?

Want to help a bunch of teachers? The Phoenix Union High School District (PUHSD) is poised to shove a new "handbook" down the throats of its teachers :(.

The new "handbook" is being used to replace a mutually agreed upon professional agreement and is being instituted against the wishes of the teachers and their professional association.

The meeting will be at the district office, 4502 N Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ, at 19:30 Thursday night.

According to the CTA president there will be a rally before the meeting at 4000 N. Central Ave. from 17:45 to 18:30 and then they'll march down to the board meeting.

Geklaut :(

Someone stole the planters Sonya had just made :(. They were nice size planters ( as big as she can make ) and she'd recently put them out front. She was off to get potting soil for them and plop in some greenery, but they're gone :(. Same with her gardening stool.

Her neighbors ( the ones with the jungle ) say they've been having stuff disappear from their place as well :(. Got to be hard to pull stuff out of there. They had a couple of little villages removed and some trains and other stuff.

We said it'd be fine with us if they re-enable the sensors to turn lights on at night if people

Freewill Konzert

Arun and I went to a Freewill concert tonight. As before they were fantabulous! Great show. It was his first time to see them and he was dutifully impressed.

I think they added to the light show. They need a projector and some videos to go with the show. They could do a google maps thing for subdivisions :). It'd be cool to fade from normal street to combo to satellite and back during the song.

Unfortunately Jay was in .ca.us with his band, so he missed it. Bought a Freewill sticker and got the band to autograph it for him.

They've got another show at the same place lined up for the 16th of June. They're gonna give away one of Geddy's dryer shirts at that show! The giveaway will be based on who donates the most food at the show. Spaghetti Lee's wife held up the shirt for me, so I could get a picture of it. Looks like it came out well.

theming flexinode

Figured out how to format flexinode items. Only works for PHPtemplate themes, so changed to a new theme. Most seem to be fixed width :(.

Still need to figure out how to autofill blocks. Looks like I'll probably have to break down and do some PHP for that.
